On a mid-morning ride to Pumpkin Hill, Elizabeth and Jane discover a lady injured in an abandoned carriage. Her coachman, grooms and horses are gone, along with the lady’s jewels. The lady in question happens to be Lady Castlereagh, arbiter of Almacks, wife of the much-maligned foreign secretary and owner of such things as a kangaroo and a bad-tempered tiger.

The lady’s injuries dictate that she must not travel for at least a month and she will stay at Longbourn for the foreseeable future. Determined to discover what has happened to her, Lady Castlereagh summons her dear friends Darcy and Bingley, and Bow Street man Horatio Quinn to Hertfordshire.

Longbourn’s drawing room is given over to Mr. Quinn as he directs all involved in their efforts to solve the mystery. Who stole the jewels? What has happened to the coachman and grooms? Was it the coachman who executed the scheme? Could it have been highwaymen? Perhaps it was the lady’s errant maid and the butler she ran off with? Or maybe the mysterious Mr. Cratchet?

As the party follows clues, Elizabeth and Darcy circle each other warily. She thinks he’s handsome and has a certain wit when he is not so serious. He thinks she’s uncommonly pretty and happily devoid of the coldness of a London lady. But he is too reserved and judgmental for her and she is too carefree and flouting convention for him. They are not at all suited. And yet…

Hertfordshire is a hive of activity as proposals are made, proposals are rejected, theories are floated, red herrings are chased, a clergyman bumbles, a stern lady miscalculates, a devious miss is the architect of her own undoing and one Bennet daughter pays the piper.

"This book will not go down in the annals of great literature, but it is great fun to read. The story must be approached with a willingness to firmly put your tongue in your cheek. It is intentionally silly at times, with plenty of eccentric behavior on the part of several characters. The new characters of Lady Castleragh and Mr. Quinn are strange but completely likeable. There are other new characters introduced who are also people you can care about.

As the book description states, Jane and Elizabeth become involved in an investigation into the assault and robbery of Lady Castleragh, which occurs close to Longbourn. Darcy and Bingley are also involved, which provides the opportunity for the two couples to meet. There are many quirky people and animals encountered along the way of the investigation, and of course Darcy is his usual haughty and disdainful self for most of the story. There are many fine instances of characters getting their comeuppance, notably Caroline and Lady Catherine. Darcy must face his own ridiculousness and humble himself to get what he wants. This is all done with wonderful carefree humor.

The book is well written, clever and imaginative. I recommend it highly."

The Lady Jewels A Pride and Prejudice Variation The Sweet Regency Romance Series Book 14 edition by Perpetua Langley Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • This book will not go down in the annals of great literature, but it is great fun to read.

I recommend it highly.
  • I first read this book in Unlimited but liked it so much, I bought a copy for my library.

Interesting and novel plot. Love it that one of the Almack ladies was Darcy's neighbor. And I love Ms. Langley's humor that pops up throughout the book as well.

A very enjoyable read, and I highly recommend it.
  • The story is not only a nice P&P variation, it is also a comedic romp much in the genre of The Trouble of being Earnest. The characters speak and think not in normal statements but exaggerated words and sentences that are very sincere in a humorous way.

Darcy is not quite as super intelligent as normally portrayed. He is still proud, a man of honor, a man who can be trusted and a man who is not VERY stubborn, just the right amount of stubborn.

Lizzy is not super Lizzy. She is just clever Lizzy. Her temper is not hair trigger and volcanic. She has the proper temper of a country heroine.

There many eccentric characters. Some are the P&P characters and some are new characters.

I really enjoyed the story. I recommend it highly and will put in my read again stack of books.
  • “The Lady’s Jewels” is an engrossing mystery from an author who always tells an amusing story.

Jane and Elizabeth (unlike canon P&P, she is an experienced equestrian) discover an abandoned carriage during a morning ride. No carriage horses, no carriage driver, no outriders, no footmen. But wait, the carriage is not completely abandoned! An older lady is present, accompanied by two Mastiffs. Shockingly, the lady is the well-known Lady Castlereagh, one of the patronesses of Almacks. Even more shocking Lady Castlereagh’s jewel box is missing along with the horses, driver and footmen.

Jane rides for help while Elizabeth renders first aid. The Lady is transported to Longbourn and the local Doctor is summoned. Lady Castlereagh’s injuries prevent her ability to travel temporarily, so she must remain with the Bennet family. She writes to Darcy and Bingley (who are unknown to the Bennets) requesting their presence along with a former Bow Street runner, Mr. Quinn. All the parties will live at Longbourn while the gentlemen find the Lady’s Jewels.

I never worry about diets. The only carrots that interest me are the number of carats in a diamond. ~ Mae West

Our story is filled with unique characters from Lady Castlereagh to her Mastiffs to a curmudgeonly doctor to a verbose stableboy. Darcy and Bingley defer to Quinn as the prime sleuth but Elizabeth is often the one with a breakthrough idea.

The reader has more clues to the mystery than the characters and the villain is easily suspected. The story is clean, with more than the usual two HEAs; well-written, well-edited and proofread. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys JAFF.

No gold-digging for me; I take diamonds! We may be off the gold standard someday. ~ Mae West
  • I have enjoyed many of Ms Langley’s other works, and regret I couldn’t like this one, too. The most glaring problem is that there’s nothing desirable about Darcy. He’s not evil; he’s just uninspiring. It’s hard to pin a love story on dull; in this instance, Elizabeth and Darcy feel like they’re in parallel lines in the same plot.

Said plot was a bit strained, logistically. How three people manage to survive for weeks in unamiable circumstances makes no sense. Solving a mystery by getting started on it...after breakfast tomorrow...does nothing to add a sense of urgency to the plot.

Second, the story itself went on far too long. Either it should have been cut by a third, or the Lydia subplot should have been fully developed. Lady Catherine and Caroline had their own, totally unneeded subplot.

Basically, there was not enough story, yet too much at the same time.

I did like the waistcoats, though.
  • This story was great fun to read. The characters felt very alive and distinctive, and the plot contained a good mystery. All the usual bad folks are there, but fortunately only in small doses, just to move the story along. The eccentric Lady Castlereagh was masterfully done and the mastiffs, along with Mr. Quinn's embroidered waistcoats added more fun to the story. I just loved the way the story wrapped up, and that Charlotte had a HEA that was truly happy.

I also appreciated that the story is well-edited, as so many JAFF stories are appalling in that regard.

My one point of confusion is that this is labeled as #14 in the Sweet Regency Romance series, but there is Lady Catherine Decamps that is also labeled as #14 in the series.

I definitely recommend reading this story!

The treaty creating the African Court of Justice and Human and Peoples' Rights, if and when it comes into force, contains innovative elements that have potentially significant implications for current substantive and procedural approaches to regional and international dispute settlements. Bringing together leading authorities in international criminal law, human rights and transitional justice, this volume provides the first comprehensive analysis of the 'Malabo Protocol' while situating it within the wider fields of international law and international relations. The book, edited by Professors Jalloh, Clarke and Nmehielle, offers scholarly, empirical, critically engaged and practical analyses of some of its most challenging provisions. Breaking new ground on the African Court, but also treating old concepts in a novel and relevant way, The African Court of Justice and Human and Peoples' Rights in Context is for anyone interested in international law, including international criminal law and international human rights law. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

  • Continuing the story from the fifth volume, Kazuma stumbles into the royal household as part of a princess’ entourage. This installment continues the hilarious hijinks of our favorite party of dysfunctional adventurers and is best enjoyed after reading the previous five volumes. Fans of the series will not be disappointed.
  • Konosuba remains a great spoof of questing tales. Megumin's rival Yunyun shows up, warning of danger to their hometown. On their way, they come across some interesting monsters. Among them are orcs. The problem is that a lot of information we have on orcs is very wrong as Kazuma learns the hard way. We meet Megumin's family and it seems they are in a matchmaking mode, trying to make something happen between Kazuma and Megumin. We tour her town and it does have its mysteries. Overall, Volume 8 continues the charm of Konosuba.
  • You will Laugh, love, and have a great time per usual. My only complaint is that these light novels are far too small even compared to other light novels for the price.

The quality makes it worth the purchase but you'll wish you had more time to read about your favorite characters when you burn through this book in just 2 to 3 hours.
  • This volume got a few good barks of laughter out of me! I felt a little sorry for Kazuma though.

Though he is the cause of most of his misfortune! I also enjoyed the foreshadowing of more major antagonists.

    Looking forward to more!
  • If you were let down that the last few novels focused too much on the trash harem... rejoice! Your eyes will sparkle as its harem lord shines with the ferocity of a half a dozen dumpster fires! Best boy Kazuma. Yep.
  • This was brilliant and like true friends each konosuba member takes every opportunity to discredit/embarrass each other lol
The events and dialogue in the novel are hilarious!
  • I liked the story a lot. Kazuma and Chris combo was really entertaining.
  • An excellent story but it downloaded with the manga cover.

"I think there might be an excellent 300-page book somewhere in these 1500 pages. It's just hard to find. The author's style is very chatty, with lots of digressions. I found myself constantly annoyed that it took so many words to get to the point of even a simple explanation. After about 100 pages, I gave up. The online help that comes with the Python kit is a little too brief and cryptic for a good tutorial, but this book goes way too far in the opposite direction."

Learning Python 5th Edition Mark Lutz 9781449355739 Books Reviews

  • I know a 1600 page book seems almost crazy but, before you start looking elsewhere (as I did) for something shorter, let me try to explain why this 1600 page book may actually end up saving you a lot of time and making you a better Python programmer in the end.

First of all, I've read many of the other well reviewed, up-to-date, Python books (yes, all of them were shorter), and being new to Python, I ended up spending most of my time searching online trying to fill in the gaps that the other authors failed to fill in. With this book you don't need to reference anything else because the author does a great job of answering every question. You can tell he's dedicated his life to teaching Python and knows what problems his readers will run into.

While this books is long, it doesn't feel long. It's not just page after page of code samples. Each concept comes with a few code samples and is followed up by very well-written, clear explanations so it's actually a fairly quick read (for a 1600 page book). Does he repeat himself as other reviewers have noted? Yes, but it feels like when he does it's purposeful.

Even though you often hear that Python is easy to learn, it's an incredibly deep language that requires time and effort. I believe that by having read this book that I'm starting out far ahead of other new Python programmers, I appreciate the language even more and I'm very comfortable even with Python's advanced topics.
  • The Definitive Python Bible. However, as a retired software engineer I can honestly say that this book is NOT for novices. It's really four books in one. Its also 1500+ pages long ! Its a basic-tutorial book, its an "under-the-hood" book, its an Object Oriented Programming Book and an
"advanced concepts" book. All in one. My biggest gripe is that you need to read about the first 300+ pages in order to have enough information to be able to write your first "real" program. This is primarily due to the fact that many introductory chapters also contain some advanced topics and show the differences between Python 2.x and 3.x.
  • OK. I'm a true beginner; seriously. I'm 35 yo English teacher who can easily create a WordPress site, or a Moodle course. Other than that, I know nothing of programming. HTML and CSS is easy. But all I know is copy-pasting code from CSS generators. Sure something has stick about CSS and HTML, but nothing about programming. I was terrified to even try.

    Until I met Python.

It was love at first sight the moment I saw its syntax. It was like reading English. I felt like New in the Matrix. So I started watching tutorials on YouTube, taking courses on Udemy, and Lynda.com, but none of them provided insightful information about the ins and outs of Python; you know, like 'the devil's in the details' kind of stuff. (Sure there are some programmers who create video tutorials on YouTube but they cover only small parts of Python programming in depth and many of them left me wanting more.

That's until I decided to google 'Best Python books'.

I found many videos that were talking about Python Crash Course, and Python the Hard Way being better than this book, but just the fact that this is a 1600 page book left me curious.

I gave it a try, and oh boy was I right.

This book doesn't let you go to the next page without explaining in details what a particular concept means. And if it doesn't clarify it right on the spot, it lets you know that it will be covered on another chapter (sometimes I skipped the chapter to see if it was right -it was).

I'm only on page 98 and can tell you that I have learned more by reading this book than what I've learned by watching video tutorials.

Don't get me wrong. Video tutorials are fun, and many people learn from them. For instance, I've learned how to create an authentication webapp using Django. No book required.

If you are a true beginner, buy this book. Don't be afraid about being 'old' and not having studied Computer Science. This book teaches you a lot of concept in a fun, user-friendly way.

I'm planning on buying the other books that follow this one. (I wish the author be writing a 6th edition of this book, since we're moving to Python 3.7 now. Then, I'll buy two Django books. And then I'll start digging into tutorials to create my portfolio; the Django way.
  • This book is overwritten and exhausting to read. It's not an intro to programming, but rather a bloated intro to the language's objects and syntax. At least a third of the text is spent referring to later chapters, reminding me about earlier chapters, explaining differences between Python versions, and explaining why the current topic is beyond the scope of the book, but still being discussed anyway. It's verbosely written in an ironically un-Python-like way.
  • Very dense reading. Covers all details, which is what I wanted. But this book is entirely inefficient. If I had $1 for each time something is touched upon and then told it will be explained later, I could pay for all of my books. After several chapters, you wouldn't still be able to make a simple program if you didn't already know the language. Once every 50 pages there will be some great detail that should be mentioned, which is why I bought it. But the rest is the book apologizing for being too dense, but actually explaining to you why it is dense, because of prior editions' feedback based on non-programmers not understanding the difference between the command line and a text file. It's a great book, but easily could be 160 pages instead of 1,600. It feels like 16,000.
  • I think there might be an excellent 300-page book somewhere in these 1500 pages. It's just hard to find. The author's style is very chatty, with lots of digressions. I found myself constantly annoyed that it took so many words to get to the point of even a simple explanation. After about 100 pages, I gave up. The online help that comes with the Python kit is a little too brief and cryptic for a good tutorial, but this book goes way too far in the opposite direction.

Sea People The Puzzle of Polynesia Audible Audio Edition Christina Thompson Susan Lyons HarperAudio Books Reviews

  • A brief history of the Polynesian people and their early interactions with Europeans, followed by an extensive discussion of how they might have sailed from island to island. Birds and butterflies sail our atmosphere by riding currents of air that they can perceive -- but that are mysterious to us earthbound creatures. In a similar manner, the island people of the Pacific grow up with the sea and can read information embedded in its expanses -- information denied to us land-bound creatures. How did they do it? How did they successfully travel expanses of hundreds of miles just by reading the ocean and the air? This science-based book doesn't have all the answers, but it does help us understand how it was possible. A concise and not overly esoteric read, authoritative as well.
  • Fascinating story of a civilization separate from the old world. A civilization that accomplished great things on their own, much like the story of the the mesoamerican civilizations. Without a compass or sextant or charts of any kind these people learned how to navigate the entire pacific and populate all the pacific islands. This book unravels the mystery of how it was done. I found myself having to constantly refer to a map of the pacific as I read. It might be a good idea to print one out before u start reading.
  • Expertly researched, wonderfully written. The complete description of the history of polynesia, Very engrossing and a joy to read.
  • A wonderful book that follows European “learning” about the Polynesian settlement of the Pacific Ocean. The perspective is helpful, because it gives readers an understanding of the science and technologies involved, and an emotional interest in the revival of Polynesian culture. The revival, because of all that was lost or destroyed, necessarily relies on science and technology.
  • This engaging account tells us what is known about the Polynesians and how it came to be known. This amazing people achieved a feat of marine exploration of thousand of miles of ocean when everyone else in the world was just dabbling in calm waters.
  • Thanks, Christina Thompson. Now I have a list of other books to read so I can understand even more! My first reaction to the photo section was frustration that they hadn't been in the text, but in retrospect, it was a nice surprise at the end.
  • Polynesians' seafaring exploits have fascinated me for several years. This book is a good introduction. I wish the book had more from Polynesians themselves. My biggest complaint is the small number of maps. In every chapter I wanted to see more of the geographic relationships of the islands and oceans being discussed.
  • Book was informative, balanced, and provided a real feeling for the expanse of the Pacific Ocean and the history and skill of those who populated it. It was a great complement to a Roads Scholar Program, which I recently took, about the culture and history of Hawaii taught by a Hawaiian teacher who had sailed and crewed on Hokule'a.

The Field Guide to Understanding 'Human Error' 9781472439055 Medicine Health Science Books Reviews

  • It's definitely worth a read, but it seriously needs the assistance of a professional editor before the next revision. The message is in there, buried under layers of redundancy so thick you'd swear they had a target word count they were aiming for. I can sum it up thusly "You can't understand why an accident occurred until you discover why the actions taken that led up to it made sense at the time. Pointing out mistakes made along the path to disaster is nowhere near as useful as figuring out why the people who made them didn't know they were mistakes".
  • This book is the perfect introduction to systems thinking when trying to understand accidents, improve safety, and make systems more resilient. The examples are great, and the author's perspective comes through loud and clear. He puts in clear relief the "old way" and "new way" of thinking about error, lays out his case for transitioning to the new way, and does it all clearly and concisely. Great read! I'll be buying extra copies to lend to colleagues.
  • I am an airline pilot and i have been greatly influenced by the work of Tony Kern. The Field Guide closed a gap on my knowledge about discipline and compliance. Five stars.
  • This book plus Dr. Conklin's pre accident investigations has completely altered my thinking. I've been in the safety field for 15+ years.. my thinking of human error was misaligned.. I strongly recommend this book to anyone in HSE or operations or businesses that hurt people
  • very helpful at understanding the language and intent of accident investigation and offers insight into the cause and effect of action taken in advance of adverse events
  • Quite an interesting take on accident investigation and understanding human error. The paradigm of the investigator placing themselves "inside the tunnel" to avoid hindsight bias is a powerful metaphor.
Some of the chapters get to be a bit hard going - with lots of restating the basic tenet of Old View vs New View though.
All in all - quite thought provoking and worth a read.
  • Found the book interesting and helpful. In am in Process Safety and it made me think about how I do HAZOPs and PHAs. This version is better organized than revision 2.
  • Looking forward to see the New View in progress. I would recommend this book to all involved in safety management and all the practitioners whom really cares about a safety culture and safe flights. We must understand that safety is in our hands and it's our responsibility to improve it as much as we can.

  • Considering how large the word MAZES is on the cover of this book, I had thought there would be more than (maybe) 10 MAZES in the whole book.

This is primarily a COLORING BOOK, with about half the pages having a Minecraft character at a world landmark (hence the "geography" claim).

The other half of the pages are blank frames for drawing/doodling/whatever, or blank "word bubble" comic type pages for you to fill in as well.

I would never consider this a "school book" or as any part of curriculum but it could be a good time-filler for a younger child. We are leaving it in the car to bring to restaurants and other places where we need to wait.
  • Our son was thrilled to get another Thinking Tree Minecraft book! He is having fun and doesn’t know it’s helping him! WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!! He struggles with reading and writing due to dyslexia, but he has shown a lot of improvement since this book arrived. • My guys really like this book. It has Dyslexia Games in them which was a selling point for me. They help my dyslexic son with his reading & my other son be more attentive. They also have Minecraft coloring pgs of famous landmarks. my guys use these to then either google or look on Youtube to learn more about. There is also Comic book bubble pgs for them to use anyway that they want. sometimes they make a comic & sometimes they use them for notes or pictures they've printed of the landmark. An there is also mazes. So you see this book is full of possibilities !
  • I got this for my son who is 4 but it was perfect for my daughter who is 6. We love the idea of classical conversation where kids are given just enough to spark curiosity and this book does that! I was looking for a book my younger guy could do and love all the right brain/ left brain activities. It leaves so much room for creativity too.
  • With a big title graphic for this book "...MAZES..." I was pretty excited. My son (age 6) loves mazes and Minecraft. He was pretty disappointed that there were only 10 mazes in the entire book. It is mostly coloring pages, and other drawing puzzles. He completed all of the mazes within a few minutes and then did move on to drawing his own pictures in the pages left for those purposes.
  • We are so excited to receive this book. We had printed the sample pages the author shared, and my son has been begging for more. There are so many different puzzles that promote critical thinking, as well as fun pictures to color and inspire creative story writing. The book quality is excellent!
  • We homeschool two girls and this journal is perfect for when I am working with one child and the other has to wait for help. There aren't as many mazes as we would have liked, but the coloring pages are fantastic. My girls love minecraft and roblox so this is the perfect time filler. I love the logic games that are woven throughout the journal.
